The director, who also wrote the screenplay, dedicates his documentary to the ultimate star, Liza, and does not hesitate to delve into aspects of her life that remained hidden from the wider public. The film opens with the actress herself in front of the director’s camera today. Through humorous remarks and honest revelations (as it seems, Liza has nothing to hide), she unveils her life, starting from the moment she was born, narrating the evolution of her career, and reaching her life today. Additionally, the actress mentions how she managed to escape the shadow of her mother, Judy Garland, and become the star she did.

Through narrations from friends and colleagues, as well as the use of archival material, including video excerpts of her life with appearances on television, cinema, and theater, we witness a tireless woman fighting to survive amidst not always ideal conditions. The soundtrack is also remarkable, utilizing iconic performances by Minnelli to create a nostalgic atmosphere that transports the audience to the decades that defined her career. At the same time, the documentary does not shy away from exploring the darker sides of her life, such as her struggles with addictions and personal disappointments, without falling into the trap of melodrama.
The documentary Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True manages to combine the glamour and tragedy of Liza Minnelli’s life in a narrative that balances between the shine of the lights and the shadows of her personal journey. With directorial mastery, the film presents not only the triumphant moments of her career but also the vulnerable aspects of a woman who was constantly battling her demons.

If there is a weakness to point out, it is the relative haste with which certain significant phases of her life are passed over, leaving the viewer wanting more analysis and time. Nevertheless, the balance between her admirable career and her personal battles remains largely successful. Overall, Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True is a moving and well-crafted documentary that honors Liza Minnelli’s legacy with honesty and respect, offering viewers a comprehensive image of the woman behind the myth.
